VISA & PERMITS

In addition to an Indian visa, foreigners must obtain inner line permit (ILP) to visit Sikkim, from any of the Indian missions abroad of Tourism office at New Delhi, Kolkata or Sikkim Tourism Office, If you are at Siliguri, Foreigners are issued a permit for initial period of 15 days, provided photocopies of Passport and Visa details along with two passport photos of the applicants are made available. It can be extended for further 30 days of 15 days each. The extension of permits can be obtained from FRO (Foreigners Registration Office) at Gangtok or the Superintendent of Police of all the districts.

Entry Formalities : Foreigners must obtain Inner Line Permit (ILP to visit Sikkim. The permits can be obtained from all Indian missions. Tourism Office – New Delhi, Sikkim Tourist Office – Kolkata and Sikkim Tourism Office – Siliguri, Rangpo Tourist Lodge on the strength of an Indian visa. The 15 days duration permit is issued on the spot without any delay provided photocopies of passports and visa details along with two passport photos of the applicants are made available then & there. The permissible duration of stay by foreign tourists would be 15 days initially with the State Government authorized to extend the same by a further period of 30 days of 15 days each. The extension of permits can be obtained from FRO at Gangtok, Superintendent of Police of the North, West and South Districts. For those interested in going for trekking in the interior regions of the State, the Department of Tourism issues Protected Area Permit (PAP) at Gangtok which is available for certain specified area for groups consisting of two or more foreigners subject to the conditions that the trekking programme is arranged through a Local Registered Travel Agency.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Restricted area permit (RAP) or protected area permit (PAP) is needed for those interested in going for tour or trekking in the interior, regions of the state. These permits are issued by the Police Check Post and Department of Tourism for a group of 2 or more foreigners subject to the condition that the trekking programme is arranged through LOCAL GOVERNMENT REGISTERED TRAVEL AGENTS ONLY. While traveling in Sikkim don’t forget to get your passport stamped at all check posts.

In whole North Sikkim is considered most picturesque with godlike mountains all around.4 to 5 days are required to fully explore this beautiful place in cars.

Gurudongmar Lake has been just opened for domestic tourists. Guests traveling by car are advised to confirm the road conditions during the month of July and August. Permits to North Sikkim are required for Indian Tourists and Foreign Nationals. Foreigners are permitted up to Chopta Valley in Lachen only. North Sikkim is under Restricted Area; hence all tours are done on Package Tour Basis only.

Nathula pass is open only four days a week i.e. Wed, Thu, Sat & Sun. Permits are issued only to the member of Travel Agents Association of Sikkim (TAAS).
